What is the Better Purchasing Framework for Advanced Cloud-Based Telephony?
This is part of NHS England’s plan to improve the technology that surgeries use to handle calls. There
is funding available for practices to upgrade to a cloud phone system, as well as a guide to the features you’ll need.
There are many reasons behind it. One is efficiency. Phonelines are busier than ever for GP reception desks, and upgraded technology can really help here. On top of that, traditional landlines are being phased out across the UK. You might have heard of the PSTN/ISDN switch-off. If not, the headline is this: all calls will have to be routed online. That’s exactly what a cloud phone system does.
What’s a cloud phone system?
Let’s start with a traditional on-premise phone system. It’s a piece of physical hardware on your site, installed and maintained in person by an engineer.
A cloud system takes all that functionality (plus a lot more!) and hosts it in the cloud. That means you have no more hardware to maintain except the devices you call with. You access all the features on one screen via the internet.
The PSTN switch-off and the healthcare sector
Significant changes are underway in the healthcare sector as the UK’s traditional copper phone lines are set to be switched off by the end of 2025. Known as the ISDN/PSTN switch-off, GP surgeries and healthcare settings across the UK need to ensure their phone systems and connectivity are ready for the deadline to avoid any disruptions to their communications.
The transition over to a fully digital network is driven by the necessity to modernise outdated PSTN and ISDN infrastructure. The switch-off marks the transition to a fully digital network, utilising Internet Protocol (IP). This simply means calls will be routed online and all UK businesses and organisations will need future-proof technology in place to support this.
So, what do GP surgeries and healthcare settings need to do? If your phones are routed through ISDN lines, you will need to change over to routing calls via VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol.) As well as looking at your phone system set up, it may also require upgrading broadband infrastructure.
